Our Program
We currently offer an extracurricular Energy, Environment, Sustainability fellowship for students interning in the DC-area during the summer of 2012. Below is an explanation of the larger vision for the future of The Activist Institute.
We plan to offer three semester programs per year: an 11-week summer semester, a 15-week fall semester, and a 15-week spring semester. As part of The Activist Institute, 15-20 students live together in a house in one of many major U.S. cities. Each institute is focused on one specific political or social issue facing progressives today. The houses are located in the city in which students can best explore their issue and expound on their knowledge.
The first house will be located in Washington, D.C. and will focus on Energy, Environment, and Sustainability. All Institute students are guaranteed placement in an internship with a well-established non-profit organization focusing on their specific issue. A list of weekly events relating to the house issue will be posted in the house on Sunday night. Each student is required to attend at least three of these events per week in addition to their internship. These events are meant to be interesting, fun, and related to the issue of the house. They range from protests, to lectures, to film screenings, to neighborhood events,--all having to go with the issue of the house.
Two house masters live in the house with the students. The house masters are recent college graduates who help maintain the house, schedule activities, trainings, and lectures, and provide support for each of the students. The students are required to meet with their house masters three times throughout the semester. These meetings are an opportunity for students to reflect on their internship and their goals and what they've learned throughout their semester.
